Coastal Landfills and Rising Sea Levels: A Challenge for the 21st Century
نویسندگان
چکیده
Populated coastal areas worldwide have a legacy of numerous solid waste disposal sites. At the same time, mean sea level is rising and likely to accelerate, increasing flooding and/or erosion. There therefore concern that landfill sites located at near coast pose growing risk environment from potential release liquid materials. This paper aims assess our present understanding this issue as well research practice needs by synthesizing available evidence across set developed country cases, comprising England, France, Germany, Netherlands, United States (Florida). Common insights gained here include: (1) lack data limited appreciation problem; (2) recognition scale diversity within range generic settings (or situations); (3) robust protocols allow impact different categories be assessed in consistent evidence-based manner, most particularly for waste. Hence, need greater following issues identified: amount, character could released sites; acceptability regulation eroding landfills; future erosion rates suggesting more monitoring relevant predictive tools; (4) full possible management methods dealing with landfills science support them; (5) long-term funding mechanisms address issue. The main focus experience current has been protection/retention, or removal landfills, consideration other feasible solutions how they might facilitated. Approaches marine/coastal represent particular gap. Lastly, will persist indefinitely levels rise many centuries, long timescale wider should included policy.

Stillbirth – a challenge for the 21st century
There are an estimated 2.6 million stillbirths each year [1]. This significant loss of life is frequently unrecognized and hidden from view due to the stigma associated with stillbirth in many countries [2]. Consequently, stillbirth does not receive the prominence it needs in order to influence international policy [3]. Earlier this year these issues were presented in the Ending Preventable Sti...

After some introductory considerations, an outline of the idea and foundation of CT is given and is contrasted with traditional approaches to other religions; the methods, goals, and also the limits of CT are discussed; CT is differentiated from religious studies and the theology of religion...
متن کاملA new approach to projecting 21st century sea-level changes and extremes: 21st century sea level
Future increases in flooding potential around the world’s coastlines from extreme sea level events is heavily dependent on projections of future global mean sea level (GMSL) rise. Yet, the two main approaches for projecting 21st century GMSL rise—i.e., process-based versus semi-empirical—give inconsistent results. Here, a novel hybrid approach to GMSL projection, containing a process-based ther...
متن کاملData-Intensive Computing: A Challenge for the 21st Century
In our world of rapid technological change, occasionally it is instructive to contemplate how much has altered in the last few years. Remembering life without the ability to view the World Wide Web (WWW) through browser windows will be difficult, if not impossible, for less “mature” readers. Is it only seven years since YouTube first appeared, a Web site that is now ingrained in many facets of ...
